Curb your enthusiasm

... because owning a succession of 48 different hi-fi amplifiers in 5 years is just bonkers, as is spending tens of thousands of pounds on pure silver mains and speaker cables. Perfect audio reproduction is impossible, and the subtle differences in the last few percent of perceived audio quality between one piece of high end kit and another are largely imaginary. The difference you think you hear is the placebo effect, induced by the knowledge of how much the kit you are listening to costs, as can be demonstrated by double blind testing. I know I can't tell the difference between a £500 and £1000 CD player in blind testing.

For most people 'good enough' really is good enough as over time your ears and brain 'tune out' the idiosyncrasies of any half decent hi-fi system, and the tonal balance of any system - largely down to the speakers and how much soft furnishing you have in your room - is a matter of personal taste. In my case, the perceived steep law of diminishing returns (plus lack of space to accommodate the really big stuff) precludes spending more than about £350 on any item in the source/amplification/speaker chain, as I'm more into the music than the Sound of Music.

Ps
I'm just about to take delivery of my fifth amplifier owned since 1972. My current 1991 vintage Pioneer A-400 has been dying in slow motion for several years and is down to it's last functioning line input. If it doesn't cost too much I might get it fixed. I have high hopes for it's replacement, the iPod friendly Yamaha A-S500, which is currently on a delivery truck somewhere between here and Madrid.
